The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement of 2024 started when students demanded reform of the quota system in government jobs, in which a large share of posts was reserved for particular groups, including descendants of freedom fighters. In June 2024, after a High Court verdict restored the old system, protests began at Dhaka University and spread to other universities. In July, the demonstrations grew into a nationwide movement. Law enforcement and clashes caused many deaths and injuries, and the government imposed a curfew and cut internet access for some days. Although the Supreme Court later reduced the quota to a small share, the protests continued with broader demands of accountability and justice. On 5 August 2024, the Prime Minister resigned and left the country, and on 8 August, an interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus took oath. The movement is widely known as the July Uprising.
