The War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971 is the proudest chapter of our history. After the Pakistani rulers refused to hand over power to the elected majority party in the 1970 election, the people of East Pakistan became furious. On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistani army launched a brutal attack on unarmed civilians in Dhaka, and on 26 March, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s declaration of independence was announced. The provisional government was formed at Mujibnagar on 17 April. Students, farmers, workers and soldiers joined the Mukti Bahini and fought a guerrilla war for nine months. Millions of people took shelter in India as refugees, and many sacrificed their lives. With the final help of the joint forces, Pakistan’s army surrendered in Dhaka on 16 December 1971, and Bangladesh became an independent country.
