Graffiti is a form of art in which pictures, slogans or words are drawn or sprayed on public walls, bridges and buildings. It began in big cities of the world, but now it is seen in Dhaka too. A graffiti artist uses spray paint, brushes and stencils to turn a dull grey wall into a colourful painting. Some of them show history, such as the Language Movement and the Liberation War, and some carry messages against drug addiction, road accidents and discrimination. In this way, graffiti gives common people, especially the young, a voice in public space. But there is another side. Writing offensive words or painting on a private or historic building without permission is vandalism. Therefore, graffiti should be created with permission, with respect for others and with a good message.

গ্রাফিতি এমন শিল্প, যেখানে সর্বজনীন দেয়াল, সেতু ও ভবনে ছবি, স্লোগান বা শব্দ আঁকা বা স্প্রে করা হয়। এটি বিশ্বের বড় শহরে শুরু হয়েছিল, কিন্তু এখন ঢাকাতেও দেখা যায়। গ্রাফিতি শিল্পী স্প্রে পেইন্ট, তুলি ও স্টেনসিল দিয়ে একঘেয়ে ধূসর দেয়ালকে রঙিন চিত্রে বদলে দেয়। কিছু ভাষা আন্দোলন ও মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মতো ইতিহাস দেখায়, আর কিছু মাদকাসক্তি, সড়ক দুর্ঘটনা ও বৈষম্যের বিরুদ্ধে বার্তা বহন করে। এভাবে গ্রাফিতি সাধারণ মানুষকে, বিশেষ করে তরুণদের, সর্বজনীন জায়গায় কণ্ঠ দেয়। কিন্তু আরেক দিকও আছে। আপত্তিকর শব্দ লেখা বা অনুমতি ছাড়া ব্যক্তিগত বা ঐতিহাসিক ভবনে আঁকা ভাঙচুর। তাই গ্রাফিতি অনুমতি নিয়ে, অন্যদের প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা রেখে ও ভালো বার্তা দিয়ে আঁকা উচিত।
