Good manners are the habits of polite, respectful and considerate behaviour towards others. They make a person gentle and loved by all. As the saying goes, ‘Manners maketh man’.
A well-mannered person speaks truthfully and softly, greets elders, listens patiently, stands in queue and thanks those who help him. At the table, in the bus and in the classroom, he thinks of the comfort of others. He does not shout, laugh at the weak or interrupt a speaker.
Good manners are important because they make social life peaceful. A person with a good character wins friends and success even without much wealth, while a rude person loses respect in spite of riches.

Wealth can buy a house but not a home; knowledge can win a job but not respect. What turns a person into a gentleman is something quieter and rarer: good manners. They are the small coins of daily behaviour in which our character is paid out.
Good manners include speaking gently, keeping promises, respecting the old and the young alike, being punctual, keeping public places clean and refusing to hurt others even with words. Their roots lie not in rules of etiquette but in empathy, the habit of imagining how another person feels. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) taught that the best among us are those with the best character.
In personal life, good manners bring trust and friendship; in professional life, they bring cooperation and promotion; and in social life, they reduce quarrel and violence. A country of well-mannered citizens needs fewer police.

সম্পদ বাড়ি কিনতে পারে, গৃহ নয়; জ্ঞান চাকরি জিততে পারে, সম্মান নয়। মানুষকে ভদ্রলোক করে এমন নীরব ও বিরল জিনিস: সদাচার। এটি দৈনন্দিন আচরণের ছোট মুদ্রা, যাতে আমাদের চরিত্র পরিশোধিত হয়।
সদাচারে আছে নরমভাবে কথা বলা, প্রতিশ্রুতি রাখা, ছোট-বড় সবাইকে সম্মান, সময়নিষ্ঠা, সর্বজনীন জায়গা পরিষ্কার রাখা এবং কথায়ও কাউকে আঘাত না করা। এর মূল শিষ্টাচারের নিয়মে নয়, সহমর্মিতায়, অন্যের অনুভূতি কল্পনা করার অভ্যাসে। মহানবী (সা.) শিখিয়েছেন আমাদের মধ্যে সেরা তারা, যাদের চরিত্র সেরা।
