A good teacher is a lamp of knowledge, and my favourite teacher, Mr Abdur Rahim, is such a lamp. He teaches English to our class at Government High School.
He is a tall, simple man of about fifty, who always wears a white panjabi. He is calm, polite and never loses his temper. He has a smile on his face when he enters the class, which makes us happy.
His teaching is wonderful. He explains grammar through examples from our daily life and teaches literature through stories. He encourages us to ask questions and never makes fun of a wrong answer. Outside the class, he helps weak students for free.

A teacher opens a door, but the student must walk through it, and the greatest teachers are those who make us want to walk. In my school life, Mr Abdur Rahim, who taught us English from class eight to ten, was exactly such a teacher, and I count him as the favourite of all.
His personality is as simple as it is strong. He is a man in his fifties with soft eyes and a calm voice, and he wears an old but clean panjabi. He never raises his hand against a student and has never lost his temper in class. Yet nobody dares to be late or careless in his lesson, because his disappointment is harder to bear than any punishment.
His method of teaching is a joy. He begins every class with a story or a question that connects the lesson with life. In grammar, he gives us patterns and makes us find the rules for ourselves; in literature, he reads the poem aloud with feeling, so that even the shy students begin to love words. He encourages every child, and the weakest in the class gets the most attention. Many of us were taught English free in his house in the evenings.
The influence on me has been lasting. Before I met him, I feared English, but he showed that a language is not a monster but a friend. Because of him, I read my first English novel and joined the debating club. More than that, his honesty and humility have taught me that a good person is more important than a good student.
I keep in touch with him even today, and I always bow to him with gratitude. If I ever become a teacher, my highest wish will be to light the lamp in someone’s mind as he lit it in mine.
