Abraham Lincoln is one of the greatest men in the history of the world. He rose from a poor log cabin to the White House by honesty and hard work.
He was born on 12 February 1809 in Kentucky, in a very poor farmer’s family. He had little schooling, but he borrowed books and studied at night by firelight. He worked as a woodcutter, a shopkeeper and a postmaster, and then became a lawyer. His honesty earned him the name ‘Honest Abe’.
In 1860, he was elected the sixteenth President of the United States. During his presidency, a civil war broke out between the northern and southern states. He led the Union to victory and declared the freedom of slaves.
On 14 April 1865, he was shot by an assassin and died the next day. His life teaches us that poverty cannot stop a determined man.

The lives of great men remind us that we can make our lives sublime, wrote the American poet Longfellow, and few lives illustrate this better than that of Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States.
Lincoln was born on 12 February 1809 in a one-room log cabin in Kentucky, to Thomas Lincoln, a poor farmer, and Nancy Hanks. When he was nine, his mother died, and the family struggled with poverty. He attended school for less than a year in total, but his hunger for knowledge was immense. He walked miles to borrow a book and read it by the light of the fire.
As a young man, he worked as a rail-splitter, a boatman, a storekeeper and a postmaster. He taught himself law and, in 1836, became a lawyer. He was known for his honesty: it is said that he once walked a long way to return a few cents to a customer whom he had overcharged by mistake.
He entered politics, was elected to the Illinois legislature and then to the Congress. His powerful speeches against the spread of slavery made him famous, and in 1860 he was elected President.
His presidency was dominated by the Civil War (1861–65), which began when the southern states left the Union to protect slavery. Lincoln was determined to preserve the Union. In 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared slaves in the rebel states free, and delivered the Gettysburg Address, one of the greatest speeches in history, which called for ‘government of the people, by the people, for the people’. The Union won the war, and the Thirteenth Amendment later abolished slavery.
On 14 April 1865, only days after the war ended, he was shot by John Wilkes Booth in a theatre and died the next morning. The whole nation mourned.
Lincoln was humble, humorous and forgiving. He did not hate his enemies, and he said the nation should act ‘with malice toward none, with charity for all’. His life proves that greatness is not a matter of birth, but of character, courage and service. It will inspire people for generations.
