Of all games, cricket is my favourite. It is the most popular game in Bangladesh, and I have loved it since childhood.
Cricket is played between two teams of eleven players each, on a field with a pitch in the middle and a wicket at each end. One side bats and tries to score runs, while the other bowls and fields to take wickets. A match may be played for fifty overs, twenty overs or, in Test cricket, for five days.
I play cricket in the field near our house every afternoon with my friends. I love batting best, and I enjoy the sound when the ball goes to the boundary. I also watch matches on television, and my favourite cricketer is Shakib Al Hasan.

Every nation has a game that touches its heart, and for the Bengali people that game is cricket. From the narrow lanes of villages to the stadium of Mirpur, one can see the passion for the bat and ball. For me, it is not merely a game but a part of my identity.
Cricket began in England, and the first Test was played in 1877. It is played by two teams of eleven, and the rules, though a little complex, are logical: a batting side tries to build a total, while the bowling side tries to dismiss the batsmen. Today it has three main formats, Test, one-day and T20, each of which tests different skills.
In Bangladesh, cricket became a national passion after our victory in the ICC Trophy of 1997 and the winning of the Test status in 2000. The victories over great teams have united the country with joy. Players like Mashrafe Mortaza, Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan have become heroes for the young.
I love cricket because it combines the mind and the body. A batsman has to think as well as hit, and a captain has to read the game like a chess player. In a team game, I learn to give up my personal glory for the sake of the team. The long hours in the sun have also taught me patience and the lesson that every defeat is a chance to learn.
