Victory Day is one of the most glorious days in the history of the Bengali nation. It is observed on 16 December every year.
After the partition of 1947, the people of East Pakistan were deprived of their rights and even their mother tongue. The Language Movement of 1952, the Six-Point Movement and the elections of 1970 led to the demand for self-rule. On 25 March 1971, the Pakistani army began a brutal attack on the unarmed people, and the Liberation War started after the declaration of independence.
The war continued for nine months, and millions of people sacrificed their lives. With the help of the Allied Forces, the freedom fighters won, and on 16 December 1971, the Pakistani army surrendered at the Race Course Ground in Dhaka. A new country, Bangladesh, was born.
On this day, the national flag is hoisted, wreaths are placed at the National Memorial in Savar, and many programmes are organised.
Victory Day reminds us to be united and to build a corruption-free country.

Victory Day, celebrated on 16 December, is the day on which the Bengali nation, after a long struggle, broke the chains of oppression and stood as a free people. It is both a day of joy and a day of remembrance, because the joy was bought with the lives of millions.
The roots of the struggle lie in the discrimination of the Pakistani rulers. After 1947, the Bengali majority of Pakistan were deprived politically, economically and culturally. The first great resistance was the Language Movement of 1952, in which Salam, Barkat, Rafiq and Jabbar gave their lives. It was followed by the movements against military rule, the Six-Point demand of 1966, the mass uprising of 1969 and the overwhelming victory of the Awami League in the election of 1970. Yet the power was not handed over.
On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistani army launched a brutal attack on the sleeping people of Dhaka, an act of genocide. Independence was declared, and on 17 April the Mujibnagar Government took oath. Freedom fighters, students, farmers and workers took up arms. Millions took refuge in India, and the Bengali people resisted with extraordinary courage during nine long months.
In the final phase, the combined forces of the Mukti Bahini and the Indian army advanced quickly, and on the afternoon of 16 December 1971, at the Race Course Ground (now Suhrawardy Udyan), General Niazi of Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender. The sovereign state of Bangladesh was born.
Now the day is observed as a national holiday. It begins with the 31-gun salute and hoisting of the national flag at dawn. Leaders and citizens place wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar, and parades, discussion meetings, rallies and cultural programmes are held. Schools organise essay and art competitions, and the buildings are decorated with lights.
Victory Day teaches us patriotism and gratitude to the freedom fighters. It also reminds us that independence is not only freedom from foreign rule but also freedom from hunger, illiteracy, injustice and corruption. The dream of the martyrs can only be realised when we build a country based on justice, democracy and equality.
In conclusion, 16 December is the proud day of every Bangladeshi. Let us renew our promise on this day to protect our sovereignty and work for the prosperity of the nation.
