Trees are the greatest gift of nature. Our life without trees is impossible.
Trees give us fruits, flowers, timber and firewood. They give oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide and keep the air clean. They bring rain, give shade in summer and hold the soil with their roots, so they prevent erosion and reduce the harm of floods and cyclones. Trees are also homes of birds and animals.
Despite these benefits, forests of Bangladesh are shrinking because of cutting and encroachment. To meet the challenge, the government observes the National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair every year in the rainy season.
Planting a tree is easy. We should select a good sapling, dig a pit, put cow dung, plant it, water it and protect it with a fence.
Every citizen should plant at least one tree each year.

A tree is a silent friend of man. It gives without asking, it stands in the sun to give us shade, and when it dies, it gives us wood. For a densely populated and climate-vulnerable country like Bangladesh, tree plantation is not a hobby but a necessity.
The benefits of trees are countless. Economically, they supply fruits, timber, fuel and raw materials for paper and furniture. Environmentally, they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, reduce temperature and noise and attract rainfall. Their roots bind the soil and protect riverbanks, embankments and the coast from erosion; the mangrove forest of the Sundarbans has saved millions of coastal people from the fury of cyclones. Trees are also the home of birds, insects and animals, which maintain the ecological balance.
Unfortunately, the forest area of Bangladesh is far below the recommended level of twenty-five per cent. Illegal logging, brick fields, hill cutting and the growth of cities have destroyed many trees. The result is rising temperature, irregular rainfall and increasing floods and droughts.
The government has taken initiatives such as the annual National Tree Plantation Campaign and Tree Fair, social forestry, roadside planting and the distribution of free saplings. Many NGOs and clubs have also created green belts along the coast.
The method is simple. One should choose the proper species according to the soil, such as fruit trees in the yard and fast-growing trees along roads. After digging a pit and mixing manure, the sapling should be planted in the rainy season, watered, fenced against cattle and observed for a few months.
Students and citizens can play an important role. Each of us may plant a tree on birthdays, protect the existing trees and campaign against illegal felling. Schools should have green clubs.
In conclusion, if we plant trees today, we protect our tomorrow. Let us pledge: for every tree we cut, we shall plant two.

দুর্ভাগ্যবশত বাংলাদেশের বনভূমি সুপারিশকৃত পঁচিশ শতাংশের অনেক নিচে। অবৈধ কাঠ কাটা, ইটভাটা, পাহাড় কাটা ও শহরের বৃদ্ধি অনেক গাছ ধ্বংস করেছে। ফল তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধি, অনিয়মিত বৃষ্টি এবং বন্যা ও খরা বৃদ্ধি।
সরকার বার্ষিক জাতীয় বৃক্ষরোপণ অভিযান ও বৃক্ষমেলা, সামাজিক বনায়ন, সড়কের পাশে রোপণ ও বিনামূল্যে চারা বিতরণের মতো উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে। অনেক এনজিও ও ক্লাবও উপকূলে সবুজ বেষ্টনী গড়েছে।
পদ্ধতি সহজ। মাটি অনুযায়ী উপযুক্ত প্রজাতি বাছা উচিত, যেমন আঙিনায় ফলগাছ ও সড়কের পাশে দ্রুত বর্ধনশীল গাছ। গর্ত খুঁড়ে সার মিশিয়ে বর্ষায় চারা লাগানো, পানি দেওয়া, গবাদিপশু থেকে বেড়া দেওয়া ও কয়েক মাস দেখাশোনা করা উচিত।
শিক্ষার্থী ও নাগরিকরা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে। আমরা প্রত্যেকে জন্মদিনে গাছ লাগাতে, বিদ্যমান গাছ রক্ষা করতে ও অবৈধ নিধনের বিরুদ্ধে প্রচারণা চালাতে পারি। স্কুলে সবুজ ক্লাব থাকা উচিত।
