Many people keep animals as pets, and I have a pet dog named Tommy. He is more than an animal to me; he is a member of my family.
Tommy is a brown dog with a white spot on his forehead. He has sharp ears, a long tail and bright eyes. He is playful and very intelligent. When I return from school, he runs to me wagging his tail and jumps with joy.
He loves milk, bread and boiled meat. He plays with a ball, and in the evening, I take him for a walk. At night, he keeps watch on the house and barks at strangers. He is very obedient and follows my commands.

Man has kept animals as companions for thousands of years, and the oldest of these friendships is that between man and dog. In my family, this friendship has a name: Tommy.
Tommy came to us as a tiny puppy that my father brought from a friend, and he has grown into a strong, brown dog with a white spot on the forehead and large, kind eyes. At first he was afraid of everything, even of my mother’s broom, but soon he decided that this house was his kingdom, and the family his pack.
His habits are charming. He wakes me up every morning by licking my face, waits at the gate for me in the afternoon and recognises the sound of my bicycle from a distance. He knows the meaning of ‘sit’, ‘come’ and ‘shake hands’, and his sense of danger is remarkable. Once at midnight, his barking woke us just in time to catch a thief near the back door.
Keeping a pet is a responsibility as well as a pleasure. Tommy needs fresh food, clean water, regular vaccines, exercise and, above all, love. I have learnt that an animal should never be left in hunger or cruelly punished, and that abandoned pets on the street are a shame for those who left them.
Tommy has taught me loyalty, kindness and the value of unconditional love. Whenever I feel sad, he puts his head on my lap, and the sadness seems to melt. I believe that a person who loves animals will also love fellow human beings.
