Environmental pollution is the contamination of air, water and soil by harmful substances. It has become one of the biggest problems of our time, and Bangladesh, especially Dhaka, is badly affected.
There are several types: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution and noise pollution. The main causes are smoke from brick kilns, factories and old vehicles, the dumping of industrial waste and plastic into rivers, the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and the loud horns of vehicles.
The effects are dangerous. Polluted air causes asthma and lung diseases; dirty water spreads cholera and diarrhoea; and chemicals kill fish and make land less fertile. Noise leads to headache and loss of hearing.
The remedies include planting more trees, treating factory waste before releasing it, banning polluting vehicles and single-use plastic, and making people aware. If everyone does his part, we can keep our environment clean for future generations.

The environment is the shelter that nature gives to all living things, and pollution is the damage that man himself does to this shelter. The scale of the damage today is so large that scientists warn about the survival of the planet.
Pollution takes many forms. In Dhaka, the air often ranks among the most polluted in the world because of dust from construction, smoke from brick kilns and vehicles and burning of waste. The Buriganga and other rivers are choked with tannery chemicals, sewage and plastic. Chemical fertilisers and pesticides poison the soil, and constant noise affects the mind.
The causes lie in rapid urbanisation, unplanned industrialisation, population pressure and weak enforcement of environmental laws. Individual carelessness, such as throwing plastic bags anywhere, adds to the problem.
The consequences are widespread. Respiratory diseases and waterborne illnesses are increasing, productivity falls through sickness, fisheries decline and tourism suffers. Pollution is also a major contributor to climate change, whose threat Bangladesh knows too well.
Both the state and citizens have roles. The government should enforce pollution control rules strictly, move polluting industries from residential areas, promote public transport and clean energy and ensure waste management. Citizens should use less plastic, avoid wasting water and energy and plant trees. If we act together, we can save the beauty of nature for our children.

পরিবেশ প্রকৃতি যে আশ্রয় সব প্রাণীকে দিয়েছে, আর দূষণ মানুষ নিজেই এই আশ্রয়ের যে ক্ষতি করে। ক্ষতির মাত্রা আজ এত বড় যে বিজ্ঞানীরা পৃথিবীর টিকে থাকা নিয়ে সতর্ক করছেন।
দূষণ নানা রূপে আসে। ঢাকায় নির্মাণের ধুলো, ইটভাটা ও যানবাহনের ধোঁয়া এবং বর্জ্য পোড়ানোর কারণে বাতাস প্রায়ই বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে দূষিত বাতাসের মধ্যে থাকে। বুড়িগঙ্গা ও অন্যান্য নদী ট্যানারির রাসায়নিক, পয়ঃবর্জ্য ও প্লাস্টিকে ভরা। রাসায়নিক সার ও কীটনাশক মাটিতে বিষ ঢালে, আর নিরন্তর শব্দ মনকে প্রভাবিত করে।
কারণ দ্রুত নগরায়ণ, অপরিকল্পিত শিল্পায়ন, জনসংখ্যার চাপ ও পরিবেশ আইনের দুর্বল প্রয়োগে। যেখানে-সেখানে প্লাস্টিক ব্যাগ ফেলার মতো ব্যক্তিগত অসতর্কতা সমস্যা বাড়ায়।
পরিণতি ব্যাপক। শ্বাসতন্ত্রের রোগ ও পানিবাহিত অসুখ বাড়ছে, অসুস্থতায় উৎপাদনশীলতা কমছে, মৎস্যসম্পদ কমছে ও পর্যটন ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হচ্ছে। দূষণ জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনেরও বড় কারণ, যার হুমকি বাংলাদেশ ভালোভাবেই জানে।
রাষ্ট্র ও নাগরিক উভয়ের ভূমিকা আছে। সরকারের উচিত দূষণ নিয়ন্ত্রণ নিয়ম কঠোরভাবে প্রয়োগ, দূষণকারী শিল্প আবাসিক এলাকা থেকে সরানো, গণপরিবহন ও পরিচ্ছন্ন জ্বালানি উৎসাহিত করা এবং বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা নিশ্চিত করা। নাগরিকদের কম প্লাস্টিক ব্যবহার, পানি ও শক্তির অপচয় এড়ানো ও গাছ লাগানো উচিত। একসঙ্গে কাজ করলে আমরা সন্তানদের জন্য প্রকৃতির সৌন্দর্য বাঁচাতে পারি।
