Bangladesh is home to hundreds of species of birds, and the Doel, or the oriental magpie-robin, is our national bird.
The Doel is a small bird, about nineteen centimetres long, with glossy black and white feathers. Its long tail is often held upright. It is a friendly bird that lives near human homes, in gardens, orchards and village groves.
It feeds mainly on insects, worms and small seeds. It builds its nest in the hollow of a tree or a wall, and the female lays three to five eggs. The Doel is famous for its sweet and varied song, which can be heard in the early morning, especially in spring.
The bird is dear to Bengalis because it is common, beautiful and musical, and it appears in our songs and poems. In 1972, it was chosen as the national bird. To save it from disappearing, we should plant trees and not harm its nests.

বাংলাদেশে শত শত প্রজাতির পাখি আছে, আর দোয়েল, বা প্রাচ্য ম্যাগপাই-রবিন, আমাদের জাতীয় পাখি।
দোয়েল প্রায় উনিশ সেন্টিমিটার লম্বা ছোট পাখি, যার চকচকে সাদা-কালো পালক। এর লম্বা লেজ প্রায়ই খাড়া থাকে। এটি বন্ধুসুলভ পাখি, যে মানুষের বাড়ির কাছে, বাগান, ফলবাগান ও গ্রামের ঝোপে থাকে।
এটি মূলত পোকামাকড়, কীট ও ছোট বীজ খায়। এটি গাছের কোটর বা দেয়ালের ফাঁকে বাসা বানায়, আর স্ত্রী পাখি তিন থেকে পাঁচটি ডিম পাড়ে। দোয়েল তার মিষ্টি ও বৈচিত্র্যময় গানের জন্য বিখ্যাত, যা ভোরে, বিশেষ করে বসন্তে, শোনা যায়।
পাখিটি বাঙালির প্রিয় কারণ এটি সাধারণ, সুন্দর ও সংগীতময়, আর আমাদের গান ও কবিতায় আসে। ১৯৭২ সালে একে জাতীয় পাখি বাছাই করা হয়। এটিকে বিলুপ্তি থেকে বাঁচাতে আমাদের গাছ লাগানো ও এর বাসার ক্ষতি না করা উচিত।

Among the many colourful birds of Bangladesh, from the kingfisher to the green parrot, the humble Doel has been chosen as our national bird, and the choice shows something about the Bengali heart: it loves music and simple beauty more than splendour.
The oriental magpie-robin, as the Doel is known in English, is a small bird with a glossy black head, back and breast and a white belly and wing patch. Its long tail, often cocked upward as it hops on the lawn, gives it a proud and lively look. In the morning, its clear whistles and trills announce the beginning of the day long before the sun is seen.
The Doel lives close to people in village yards, city parks and mango groves. It feeds on insects, spiders and small worms, and thus acts as a friend of the farmer by controlling pests. Its nest is hidden in a hole of a tree trunk or a wall, where the female takes care of her eggs while the male guards the territory with song.
Culturally, the bird has been honoured in our poems and folk songs, and its picture appears on stamps and posters. It was declared the national bird in 1972, and it is the symbol of our natural wealth and sweetness of life.
Unfortunately, the cutting of old trees, the use of pesticides and the growth of concrete cities are reducing its homes. We should protect old trees, keep gardens bird-friendly and teach children to listen to the Doel’s song rather than catch it. If the song of the Doel disappears from our mornings, something deep will also disappear from our culture.

কিংফিশার থেকে সবুজ টিয়া পর্যন্ত বাংলাদেশের অনেক রঙিন পাখির মধ্যে সাদাসিধে দোয়েলকে জাতীয় পাখি বাছাই করা হয়েছে, আর এই পছন্দ বাঙালি হৃদয় সম্পর্কে কিছু বলে: এটি জাঁকজমকের চেয়ে সংগীত ও সরল সৌন্দর্য বেশি ভালোবাসে।
ইংরেজিতে প্রাচ্য ম্যাগপাই-রবিন নামে পরিচিত দোয়েল চকচকে কালো মাথা, পিঠ ও বুক এবং সাদা পেট ও ডানার দাগের ছোট পাখি। লনে লাফানোর সময় প্রায়ই ওপরে তোলা লম্বা লেজ একে গর্বিত ও প্রাণবন্ত দেখায়। সকালে এর পরিষ্কার শিস ও ট্রিল সূর্য দেখার অনেক আগে দিন শুরুর ঘোষণা দেয়।
দোয়েল গ্রামের উঠান, শহরের পার্ক ও আমবাগানে মানুষের কাছে থাকে। এটি পোকামাকড়, মাকড়সা ও ছোট কীট খায়, তাই কীট নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে কৃষকের বন্ধু। এর বাসা গাছের গুঁড়ি বা দেয়ালের ফাঁকে লুকানো, যেখানে স্ত্রী পাখি ডিমের যত্ন নেয় আর পুরুষ পাখি গান দিয়ে এলাকা পাহারা দেয়।
সাংস্কৃতিকভাবে পাখিটি আমাদের কবিতা ও লোকগানে সম্মানিত, আর এর ছবি ডাকটিকিট ও পোস্টারে আসে। ১৯৭২ সালে একে জাতীয় পাখি ঘোষণা করা হয়, আর এটি আমাদের প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদ ও জীবনের মধুরতার প্রতীক।
দুর্ভাগ্যবশত পুরোনো গাছ কাটা, কীটনাশক ব্যবহার ও কংক্রিটের শহরের বিস্তার এর আবাস কমাচ্ছে। আমাদের পুরোনো গাছ রক্ষা, বাগান পাখিবান্ধব রাখা এবং শিশুদের দোয়েল ধরার বদলে এর গান শুনতে শেখানো উচিত। দোয়েলের গান আমাদের সকাল থেকে হারালে আমাদের সংস্কৃতির গভীর কিছুও হারাবে।
