A village market, locally known as ‘haat’, is the economic heart of rural Bangladesh. In my village, it sits every Sunday and Wednesday on the bank of the river, under a few huge banyan trees.
By early morning, the place begins to fill up. Farmers arrive with baskets of rice, potatoes, brinjals and pumpkins, fishermen bring fresh fish and women sell eggs and poultry. In one corner, a potter displays clay pots, and in another, a weaver spreads out colourful cloth. A cry of ‘Fresh fish, fresh fish!’ mixes with the bargaining of buyers and the music of a hawker.
The market is important for the villagers because it gives farmers a place to sell their crops and families a place to buy what they need. It is also a social meeting place where news is exchanged. However, the lack of proper sheds, drains and sanitation causes difficulty in the rainy season. If these are improved, the village market can serve the people even better.

If one wishes to understand rural Bangladesh, one should not read a book but go to a village market on a haat day. There, in a few acres of dust and noise, the economy, culture and character of the countryside appear together.
The haat in my village begins before sunrise, when boats and bullock carts arrive with the day’s goods. By ten o’clock, the area is a sea of heads. Heaps of green chillies glow beside hills of onions; freshly caught hilsa flashes silver in baskets; and a poultry seller argues with a customer over a rooster. Everything is bought and sold by bargaining, and it is not the price alone that is exchanged but also jokes, greetings and the news of the day.
Economically, the haat is the link between the farmer and the consumer. It sets the price of crops, creates income for traders and porters and supports small artisans like potters and basket weavers. Socially, it is a meeting place where relatives meet, marriages are talked about and political discussions take place over a cup of tea.
But the market also reveals weaknesses: the lack of cold storage forces farmers to sell perishable goods cheaply, middlemen take a large share of the profit and sanitation is poor. With better roads, storage and mobile price information, the traditional haat can be transformed into a more profitable and cleaner centre, without losing its warmth.

অর্থনৈতিকভাবে হাট কৃষক ও ভোক্তার সংযোগ। এটি ফসলের দাম ঠিক করে, ব্যবসায়ী ও কুলির আয় তৈরি করে এবং কুমার ও ঝুড়ি-বুননকারীর মতো ছোট কারিগরদের সহায়তা করে। সামাজিকভাবে এটি মিলনস্থল, যেখানে আত্মীয় দেখা হয়, বিয়ের কথা হয় ও চায়ের কাপে রাজনৈতিক আলোচনা চলে।
