Deforestation is the permanent removal of forests for other uses. In Bangladesh, forest covers only a small part of the land, which is far below the amount needed for a healthy environment.
The main causes are the growing population, the demand for timber and firewood, the expansion of farmland and houses and illegal logging. In the hill areas, slash-and-burn cultivation also destroys forest.

A forest is not only a collection of trees; it is a living system which gives us oxygen, rain, food, medicine and shelter. Deforestation, the clearing of forests on a large scale, is therefore among the most serious threats to the planet.
The causes are both economic and social. Poverty drives landless people to cut wood for fuel; commercial greed encourages illegal logging; and rapid urbanisation demands land for roads and housing. In Bangladesh, the forests of Chattogram and Sylhet hills and even the mangroves of the Sundarbans face pressure from encroachment and unplanned development.
The environmental effects are far-reaching. The loss of trees breaks the food chain and pushes species like the elephant and the tiger towards extinction. Without roots to hold the soil, hill slopes collapse in the monsoon and rivers silt up.
