A journey by bus is the most common way of travelling in our country. Last winter, I travelled from Dhaka to Rajshahi by an air-conditioned bus to visit my uncle.

In a country where the railway network is limited and many roads link the towns, the bus is the true vehicle of ordinary people. I was reminded of this during my recent journey from Dhaka to Sylhet, which taught me more about society than a month in the classroom.
The terminal was a small world in itself. Porters rushed with luggage, ticket sellers called out destinations, and hawkers sold peanuts, water and magazines. Inside the bus, a farmer sat beside a college student, and a mother was calming her child. Everyone was going somewhere for a different reason: work, treatment, marriage or home.
As the bus moved onto the highway, the monotony of the city turned into the beauty of the open landscape: tea gardens, rivers and distant blue hills. Yet the beauty was disturbed by reckless overtaking, loud horns and the sight of a roadside accident. I realised how closely safety depends on the discipline of drivers and the strictness of the law.
We reached Sylhet late at night, tired but thoughtful. The journey showed me both the energy and the weakness of our public transport. If the roads are made safer and the buses better managed, travelling by bus can become a pleasure rather than a burden.

আমরা গভীর রাতে সিলেট পৌঁছালাম, ক্লান্ত কিন্তু চিন্তাশীল। ভ্রমণ আমাকে আমাদের গণপরিবহনের শক্তি ও দুর্বলতা দুই-ই দেখিয়েছে। সড়ক নিরাপদ ও বাস ভালোভাবে পরিচালিত হলে বাসভ্রমণ বোঝা নয়, আনন্দ হতে পারে।
