A journey by train is a pleasure for everybody, and I have loved it since childhood. Last December, I travelled from Dhaka to Chattogram by Subarna Express with my parents.
We reached Kamalapur Railway Station an hour before the departure time. The platform was full of passengers, porters and hawkers. After the guard waved his green flag and blew the whistle, the train moved with a long hoot.
Through the window, I enjoyed the changing scenes. We crossed wide rice fields, small rivers, bamboo groves and green hills, and at several junctions, vendors sold tea and fruits. The tunnel near Fazilpur made the train dark for a moment, and the children shouted with joy.

There is a special romance in the long whistle of a train, and every Bengali child knows it from the days of listening to grandmothers’ stories. When I recently travelled from Dhaka to Sylhet by train, that romance became a living experience.
The station, early in the morning, was a theatre of hurry and hope. Porters in red shirts carried trunks, a mother counted her children, and loudspeakers announced the platform of each train. When the engine hooted and the carriages began to move, the whole station seemed to wave us goodbye.
Outside the window, Bangladesh unrolled like a painted scroll: green paddy waves, ponds with lilies, tin-roofed houses and, after Srimangal, the tea gardens in neat rows. Inside the compartment, strangers soon became friends, sharing food and talking about their homes. A retired teacher told us about the days of steam engines.
As I looked at the world from the window, I thought that the train is a moving school of tolerance, since people of all classes and ages travel under one roof. Of course, delays and dirty toilets remind us that our railways need modernisation. But the pleasure of a train journey, its peace, its safety and its beauty, is something that no other vehicle in our country can fully replace.

জানালা দিয়ে জগৎ দেখতে দেখতে ভাবলাম ট্রেন সহনশীলতার চলমান স্কুল, কারণ সব শ্রেণি ও বয়সের মানুষ এক ছাদের নিচে ভ্রমণ করে। অবশ্য দেরি ও নোংরা টয়লেট মনে করায় আমাদের রেলের আধুনিকায়ন দরকার। তবু ট্রেনভ্রমণের আনন্দ, শান্তি, নিরাপত্তা ও সৌন্দর্য এমন, যা আমাদের দেশের অন্য কোনো বাহন পুরোপুরি প্রতিস্থাপন করতে পারে না।
