Covid-19 is a highly infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus. It was first identified in Wuhan, China, in late 2019, and in March 2020, the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic. Bangladesh recorded its first cases on 8 March 2020.
The virus spreads through droplets from the nose and mouth of an infected person. Its common symptoms are fever, dry cough, tiredness and loss of taste and smell.
The pandemic changed life in every way. Schools and offices remained closed for months, and students had to study through online classes. Many people lost their jobs, small businesses collapsed and hospitals were under severe pressure. Thousands of lives were lost, and families suffered deep grief.
To prevent the disease, people were advised to wear masks, wash hands, keep a distance and stay at home when sick. Vaccines later gave strong protection. Covid-19 has taught us the value of health, cleanliness and cooperation.

Rarely in the modern age has a single microscopic organism changed human life as sharply as the coronavirus. Covid-19, first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, travelled across the world within weeks, and in March 2020, the World Health Organization declared it a global pandemic.
Bangladesh detected its first cases on 8 March 2020. The government soon imposed a general holiday and lockdown, closed educational institutions and urged people to stay home. Cities fell silent, and the garment factories, markets and transport were disrupted.
The economic effects were severe. Day labourers, rickshaw pullers and small traders lost daily income overnight, remittances were affected and many families fell back into poverty. Socially, isolation, fear and the stigma of infection tested relationships. Nevertheless, there were also stories of generosity, as young volunteers distributed food and doctors and nurses worked beyond exhaustion.
In education, the closure of schools for about eighteen months led to learning loss, especially among poor children without internet access, and increased early marriage and dropout. In health, the crisis revealed the weaknesses of our hospitals but also pushed the expansion of testing, oxygen supply and a nationwide vaccination campaign.
The pandemic taught us humility before nature and the importance of public health, hygiene, scientific information and global cooperation. It also warned that the next health crisis may come sooner than we expect. A wise nation, therefore, will use this painful memory to build a stronger health system.
