Eve teasing, now more properly called sexual harassment, means troubling girls and women in streets, buses, schools and online through comments, whistles, following or unwelcome gestures. It is a serious social problem in our country.
The causes include a lack of moral education, the bad influence of some media and bad company, drug use and the false belief that such behaviour is a joke. Weak enforcement of law and the silence of victims encourage the offenders.
The effects are painful. Girls lose their confidence, stop going to school or coaching and sometimes fall into depression. Some families marry their daughters early to ‘save’ them, and this harms the girls’ future.
To stop it, parents should teach boys to respect women from childhood, and schools should run awareness programmes. The consequences are heavy. Victims suffer fear, loss of confidence and sometimes depression, and several tragic cases have ended in suicide. Education suffers when girls drop out or are married early. The nation loses their talent and contribution.
A solution needs both law and change of mind. The legal system must give quick, certain punishment, supported by safe complaint channels and protection for witnesses. Public transport and campuses need better lighting, patrol and reporting mechanisms. But the deepest remedy is education: schools and homes must teach consent, respect and empathy, and men and boys must be partners in the effort, not bystanders. When harassment is treated not as a girl’s problem but as a society’s disgrace, we shall be on the way to real safety.
