Flowers are the smile of nature, and Bangladesh, with its six seasons, is blessed with flowers throughout the year. Their colours and fragrance fill our life with beauty.
Our national flower is the shapla, or water lily, which floats in white on ponds and beels in the rainy season. Other popular flowers include the rose, jasmine, tuberose, marigold, hibiscus and bokul. Each season has its own flowers: shiuli and kash in autumn, krishnachura and radhachura in summer, shimul and palash in spring and rajanigandha in winter.
Flowers are used in many ways. We offer them to guests, wear them in hair and decorate homes and stages with them. On Ekushey February and Victory Day, we place flowers on the Shaheed Minar to honour the martyrs. Flower farming around Jashore and Savar also provides income to many farmers.
Therefore, we should preserve flowers by planting more and avoid plucking them without need.

A land without flowers is like a poem without rhyme. Bangladesh, the land of six seasons, has a poem written in petals through the year, and the Bengali heart has always been in love with it.
The national flower, shapla, rises white from the muddy water and teaches the lesson of purity amid impurity. Beyond it, the calendar of the Bengali year is a calendar of flowers: the golden bokul and jasmine of the early summer, the red blaze of krishnachura in Baishakh and Jaishtha, the white kash and fragrant shiuli of autumn, the palash and shimul that colour the spring and the sweet-scented rajanigandha of winter.
Flowers are woven into our literature and culture. Poets from Tagore to Jasimuddin have sung of them, and their names enter our songs and proverbs.
