My Favourite Poet Composition for Class 9-10 and SSC
Kazi Nazrul Islam is my favourite poet. He is known as the Rebel Poet and is the national poet of Bangladesh.
Nazrul was born on 24 May 1899 in Churulia village of Burdwan district in West Bengal. His father died when he was a child, and he worked in a bakery and joined a folk theatre group to earn a living. He later served in the army and then turned to writing.
His poem ‘Bidrohi’, published in 1922, made him famous overnight. His other works include the poetry collections ‘Agnibina’ and ‘Sanchita’, the novel ‘Bandhan-hara’ and more than three thousand songs known as Nazrul Geeti. His writing stands against slavery, communalism and injustice.
I admire him because he sang of the equality of all human beings and of the unity of Hindus and Muslims. His fiery words fill my heart with courage. He died in Dhaka on 29 August 1976.

নজরুল ১৮৯৯ সালের ২৪ মে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্ধমান জেলার চুরুলিয়া গ্রামে জন্মেছিলেন। শৈশবে বাবা মারা গেলে তিনি জীবিকার জন্য রুটির দোকানে কাজ করেন ও লোকনাট্যদলে যোগ দেন। পরে তিনি সেনাবাহিনীতে কাজ করে লেখালেখিতে আসেন।
১৯২২ সালে প্রকাশিত তাঁর ‘বিদ্রোহী’ কবিতা তাঁকে রাতারাতি বিখ্যাত করে। তাঁর অন্য রচনার মধ্যে আছে ‘অগ্নিবীণা’ ও ‘সঞ্চিতা’ কাব্যগ্রন্থ, ‘বাঁধনহারা’ উপন্যাস এবং নজরুলগীতি নামে তিন হাজারের বেশি গান। তাঁর লেখা দাসত্ব, সাম্প্রদায়িকতা ও অন্যায়ের বিরুদ্ধে।

Many poets are loved for the sweetness of their words, but a few are loved because they make us stand up. Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Rebel Poet and the national poet of Bangladesh, belongs to the second class, and that is why he is my favourite.
Born in 1899 in Churulia, in a poor family, Nazrul had a hard childhood. After his father’s death, he worked in a bakery and sang in a village folk troupe. His life took him from rural poverty to the army, and from the army to the streets of Kolkata as a journalist, where his pen turned into a weapon. His poem ‘Bidrohi’ announced the arrival of a new voice, proud, fearless and rebellious. His magazines and poems were banned by the colonial rulers, and he was sent to jail, where he went on a hunger strike.
Beyond rebellion, Nazrul was a poet of love and devotion. He wrote songs of such variety, ghazals, Shyama sangeet, Islamic hymns and patriotic marches, that Nazrul Geeti is considered a separate genre of Bengali music. In ‘Samyabadi’, he declared that there is no greater religion than humanity. His poem ‘Chol Chol Chol’ became a marching song of the Liberation War and still inspires the nation.
I like Nazrul because his work says that fear is the only real chain and that the human being is greater than any barrier of caste or creed. When I feel weak, his lines give me strength. He spent his last years in silence due to illness and died in Dhaka in 1976, but the fire he lit continues to burn in every Bengali heart.

বিদ্রোহের বাইরে নজরুল প্রেম ও ভক্তির কবি। তিনি গজল, শ্যামাসংগীত, ইসলামি গান ও দেশাত্মবোধক মার্চের মতো এত বৈচিত্র্যের গান লিখেছেন যে নজরুলগীতি বাংলা সংগীতের আলাদা ধারা হিসেবে গণ্য। ‘সাম্যবাদী’তে তিনি ঘোষণা করেছেন মানবতার চেয়ে বড় ধর্ম নেই। তাঁর ‘চল চল চল’ কবিতা মুক্তিযুদ্ধের মার্চিং গান হয়েছিল ও এখনো জাতিকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে।
আমি নজরুলকে পছন্দ করি কারণ তাঁর কাজ বলে ভয়ই একমাত্র প্রকৃত শিকল এবং মানুষ জাতি বা ধর্মের যেকোনো বাধার চেয়ে বড়। দুর্বল বোধ করলে তাঁর পঙ্ক্তি আমাকে শক্তি দেয়। তিনি অসুস্থতায় শেষ বছরগুলো নীরবে কাটিয়ে ১৯৭৬ সালে ঢাকায় মারা যান, কিন্তু তাঁর জ্বালানো আগুন প্রতিটি বাঙালির হৃদয়ে জ্বলতে থাকে।
