Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the biggest city of our country. Last winter, I visited it for the first time with my uncle during my winter vacation.
We reached Dhaka by bus in the morning and stayed at my uncle’s flat in Mirpur. During the next three days, I visited many places. I saw the National Parliament House designed by Louis Kahn, the National Museum, the Shaheed Minar, Lalbagh Fort and the National Zoo. I also took a ride on the metro rail, which was a new experience for me.
I noticed that the city was full of people, rickshaws and buses, and I was stuck in traffic for hours. The air was also dusty and noisy. But I liked the busy life and the variety of food. On the last day, I bought some books from Nilkhet.
I returned home with many pleasant memories. Dhaka has problems, but it is a city of energy and hope.

Every capital is a mirror of its nation, and Dhaka is a mirror full of contradictions: ancient and modern, noisy and warm, chaotic and creative. Last December, I visited it with my father for the first time, and the trip taught me more about my country than many books.
We travelled by an overnight train from Rajshahi and reached Kamalapur at dawn, when the city was already awake. From the first moment, I felt the enormous energy of a metropolis of more than twenty million people.
In the old part of the city, we visited Lalbagh Fort, the unfinished Mughal palace of the seventeenth century, and the Ahsan Manzil, the pink palace on the Buriganga. I walked through the narrow lanes of Old Dhaka, where I tasted bakarkhani and saw the craftsmen of Shankhari Bazar. At the National Memorial in Savar and the Liberation War Museum, I felt a lump in my throat for the sacrifices of 1971.
Modern Dhaka was equally fascinating. The Parliament Building of Louis Kahn, with its geometric beauty, stunned me. The metro rail, which carried me smoothly over the traffic, showed the face of the future, and the glass towers of Gulshan and Motijheel reflected the new economy.
Yet the dark side was visible too. The traffic jam could waste three hours on a short trip, the air was heavy with dust and the sight of the street children and the slums disturbed me. I realised that the city’s growth had not matched its planning.
I returned home thoughtful and grateful. Dhaka is not an easy city, but it has the spirit of a nation that never stops dreaming. I look forward to visiting it again.

আধুনিক ঢাকাও সমান আকর্ষণীয়। লুই কানের সংসদ ভবন তার জ্যামিতিক সৌন্দর্যে আমাকে স্তব্ধ করল। মেট্রোরেল, যা যানজটের ওপর দিয়ে আমাকে মসৃণভাবে নিয়ে গেছে, ভবিষ্যতের মুখ দেখাল, আর গুলশান ও মতিঝিলের কাচের টাওয়ার নতুন অর্থনীতি প্রতিফলিত করল।
