Bangladesh has many beautiful flowers, but the shapla, or water lily, was chosen as the national flower.
The shapla is an aquatic plant that grows in the shallow water of ponds, lakes and haors. Its round green leaves float flat on the water, and its snowy-white flowers rise on long stems. It blooms mostly in the rainy season and in autumn, and the flowers close at night.
The shapla is useful as well as beautiful. Its stem and seeds are eaten as food in villages, and it also provides fodder for animals. Its roots purify the water.
The flower is shown in the national emblem of Bangladesh, between the two sheaves of paddy, and it symbolises purity and our connection with water. We should protect the ponds and wetlands where it grows.

শাপলা জলজ উদ্ভিদ, যা পুকুর, হ্রদ ও হাওরের অগভীর পানিতে জন্মায়। এর গোলাকার সবুজ পাতা পানিতে চ্যাপ্টা ভাসে, আর বরফ-সাদা ফুল লম্বা বৃন্তে ওঠে। এটি বেশির ভাগ বর্ষা ও শরতে ফোটে, আর ফুল রাতে বন্ধ হয়ে যায়।

Out of mud rises a flower of pure white: this single image explains why the shapla, or water lily, holds a special place in the Bengali mind. It was chosen as the national flower of Bangladesh because it grows in every corner of our delta and is a part of our daily life.
Botanically, the shapla belongs to the water lily family. It is a perennial herb whose roots are fixed in the mud while its round leaves and star-like flowers float on the surface. The petals are white, sometimes with a pink touch, and the flower opens in the morning and closes in the evening. It is most abundant in the monsoon and in autumn, when ponds and haors turn into white carpets.
The plant is useful in many ways. The stalk, boiled or cooked, is a popular vegetable, and the seeds are also edible. It gives food for fish and cattle, and its roots help to keep the water clean. In the villages, children make garlands from its stems.
Symbolically, it is the flower of the people. Its life in the mud and yet its clean beauty tell of the capacity of ordinary Bengalis to live with purity in poor conditions. It appears in the national emblem, on stamps and in poems.
However, the drying of ponds, filling of wetlands and the use of chemicals are threatening it. To save the shapla, we must protect our wetlands and teach children to value them.

কাদা থেকে ওঠে বিশুদ্ধ সাদা ফুল: এই একক ছবিই ব্যাখ্যা করে কেন শাপলা বাঙালি মনে বিশেষ স্থান রাখে। এটি বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় ফুল হিসেবে বাছাই হয়েছে কারণ এটি আমাদের ব-দ্বীপের প্রতি কোণে জন্মায় ও দৈনন্দিন জীবনের অংশ।
উদ্ভিদবিদ্যায় শাপলা পদ্মফুল পরিবারের। এটি বহুবর্ষজীবী ঔষধি, যার শিকড় কাদায় স্থির আর গোলাকার পাতা ও তারার মতো ফুল পানির ওপর ভাসে। পাপড়ি সাদা, কখনো গোলাপি ছোঁয়াসহ, আর ফুল সকালে ফোটে ও সন্ধ্যায় বন্ধ হয়। এটি বর্ষা ও শরতে সবচেয়ে বেশি, যখন পুকুর ও হাওর সাদা গালিচা হয়ে যায়।

তবে পুকুর শুকিয়ে যাওয়া, জলাভূমি ভরাট ও রাসায়নিক ব্যবহার একে হুমকিতে ফেলছে। শাপলা বাঁচাতে আমাদের জলাভূমি রক্ষা ও শিশুদের তার মূল্য শেখানো উচিত।
জাতীয় ফুল তাই আমাদের বিনয়, সৌন্দর্য ও পানির সঙ্গে গভীর সংযোগের কথা শেখায়।
