Bangladesh is a land of fruits, and the jackfruit has been chosen as our national fruit.
The jackfruit is one of the largest tree-borne fruits in the world. It has a thick green skin covered with small thorns and weighs from five to over twenty kilograms. Inside are many golden-yellow bulbs, each with a seed, which are sweet and have a strong smell.
The fruit ripens in the months of Jaistha and Ashar, in May and June. The ripe bulbs are eaten raw or made into juice and sweets. The green fruit is cooked as a vegetable, and the seeds are boiled or roasted. The leaves are given to goats and cows, and the wood is used for making furniture and boats.
The jackfruit is rich in vitamins and fibre, and it is cheap, so poor people can enjoy it too. It grows easily in homesteads without much care. We should plant more jackfruit trees.

ফল জ্যৈষ্ঠ ও আষাঢ় মাসে, মে ও জুনে, পাকে। পাকা কোয়া কাঁচা খাওয়া হয় বা রস ও মিষ্টিতে ব্যবহার হয়। কাঁচা ফল সবজি হিসেবে রান্না হয়, আর বীজ সেদ্ধ বা ভাজা হয়। পাতা ছাগল ও গরুকে দেওয়া হয়, আর কাঠ আসবাব ও নৌকা বানাতে ব্যবহার হয়।

Among the many fruits of Bangladesh, such as mango, litchi, banana and guava, the humble jackfruit has been given the honour of being the national fruit. The choice is fitting, because the tree is found in almost every village homestead and gives a large amount of food from a small amount of care.
The jackfruit tree is tall and evergreen, with dark glossy leaves. Its fruit grows directly from the trunk and thick branches, and may weigh as much as thirty kilograms. The thorny green rind hides sweet golden bulbs with a rich aroma. The fruit ripens in early summer, and in every neighbourhood, the smell of ripe jackfruit announces the season.
No part of the tree is wasted. Ripe bulbs are eaten fresh or made into juice, pudding and dried sweets; green jackfruit is cooked as a meat-like vegetable, and the boiled seeds are eaten as a snack. Leaves feed cattle, and the yellow wood, strong and durable, is used for furniture, boats and musical instruments.
Nutritionally, the fruit is rich in vitamin C, potassium and dietary fibre. Because it needs little fertiliser, it is a low-cost food, and recently its use as a meat substitute has drawn interest abroad. Its processing may create jobs in rural areas.
However, a large quantity of jackfruit rots every year for want of storage and marketing. If we develop processing and preserve the fruit, it can improve both nutrition and income.
The jackfruit is, in short, a symbol of generosity: it is rough outside, sweet inside and gives freely to all.

বাংলাদেশের আম, লিচু, কলা ও পেয়ারার মতো অনেক ফলের মধ্যে সাদাসিধে কাঁঠাল জাতীয় ফলের সম্মান পেয়েছে। পছন্দটি যথাযথ, কারণ প্রায় প্রতি গ্রামের বাড়িতে গাছটি আছে ও অল্প যত্নে প্রচুর খাদ্য দেয়।
কাঁঠাল গাছ লম্বা ও চিরসবুজ, গাঢ় চকচকে পাতাযুক্ত। ফল সরাসরি কাণ্ড ও মোটা ডালে জন্মায় ও ওজন ত্রিশ কেজি পর্যন্ত হতে পারে। কাঁটাযুক্ত সবুজ খোসা সমৃদ্ধ সুগন্ধের মিষ্টি সোনালি কোয়া লুকিয়ে রাখে। ফল গ্রীষ্মের শুরুতে পাকে, আর প্রতি পাড়ায় পাকা কাঁঠালের গন্ধ মৌসুমের ঘোষণা দেয়।
গাছের কোনো অংশ নষ্ট হয় না। পাকা কোয়া তাজা খাওয়া হয় বা রস, পুডিং ও শুকনো মিষ্টিতে ব্যবহার হয়; কাঁচা কাঁঠাল মাংসের মতো সবজি হিসেবে রান্না হয়, আর সেদ্ধ বীজ নাশতা হিসেবে খাওয়া হয়। পাতা গবাদিপশু খায়, আর হলুদ কাঠ, শক্ত ও টেকসই, আসবাব, নৌকা ও বাদ্যযন্ত্রে ব্যবহার হয়।
পুষ্টিগতভাবে ফলটি ভিটামিন সি, পটাশিয়াম ও খাদ্য আঁশে সমৃদ্ধ। এতে সার কম লাগে বলে এটি কম খরচের খাদ্য, আর সম্প্রতি মাংসের বিকল্প হিসেবে এর ব্যবহার বিদেশে আগ্রহ পেয়েছে। এর প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ গ্রামীণ এলাকায় কর্মসংস্থান তৈরি করতে পারে।
তবে সংরক্ষণ ও বিপণনের অভাবে প্রতি বছর প্রচুর কাঁঠাল পচে যায়। আমরা প্রক্রিয়াজাতকরণ উন্নত ও ফল সংরক্ষণ করলে এটি পুষ্টি ও আয় দুটোই বাড়াতে পারে।
