The prize day is the most colourful day of the school year, and ours was held last January in the school field.
For a week, teachers and students prepared the programme. A big pandal was set up, the gate was decorated with flowers, and the stage was covered with a red carpet. Parents and guests arrived early.
The chairman of the school committee was the chief guest. After the recitation from the Holy Book, the headmaster read the annual report, and the students performed songs, dances and a short play. There was a lot of applause.
Then came the prizes. The chief guest gave the prizes to the winners of sports, debates and the annual examination. When my name was called for the first position in the class, I went to the stage with joy and received a book and a certificate.

Every school has days of study, but only one day of celebration: the prize day. It is the day when hard work is publicly honoured, and the shy student of the back bench stands on the stage under the applause of hundreds. Last January, I experienced this feeling when my school held its annual prize-giving ceremony.
Preparations began a month earlier. The sports teams had completed their competitions, and rehearsals for the cultural programme filled every afternoon. On the day, the school field had been transformed. A colourful pandal covered the ground, the gate was decorated with flags and flowers, and banners welcomed the guests. Rows of chairs were filled with proud parents.
The programme started at ten o’clock with the recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. The principal of the local college was the chief guest, and the chairman of the managing committee presided. The headmaster read the annual report, which showed that the school had achieved a hundred per cent success in the last SSC examination.
Then the stage came alive. Students performed patriotic songs, a Tagore dance and a short play on the dangers of drug addiction. A boy from class eight recited Nazrul’s poem with such passion that the audience stood up for him.
The prize distribution was the main event. Winners of the sports, debate, essay and handwriting competitions, and the toppers of each class, were called one by one.
