Education makes a man intelligent, but service makes him human. A student who has only grades but no concern for the people around him has learnt half of the lesson of life. That is why social service is an essential part of the student’s life.
Social service means voluntary work for the welfare of society. Bangladesh, a densely populated country with many poor and illiterate people and frequent natural disasters, needs the energy of the young. Students are free from family burdens, full of idealism and available in large numbers, so they are the best volunteers.
The fields are vast. In education, they can teach illiterate adults and poor children in the evening. In health, they can organise blood donation camps, spread knowledge about hygiene and arrange free medical camps with doctors. In the environment, they can plant trees, clean canals and campaign against plastic. During floods, cyclones and fires, they can raise funds, pack relief and rescue people. They can also fight social evils like dowry, child marriage, drug abuse and eve teasing through drama and rallies.
There are glorious examples. During the 1971 war, students served the refugees and freedom fighters. The Scouts and the Red Crescent youth volunteers continue the tradition, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, many young volunteers delivered food and oxygen to the needy.
