Duty is the debt which a person owes to his family, society and nation, and the sooner he understands it, the better. Student life is the time when the habit of doing duty is formed, because the habits formed in youth last for life.
The first duty of a student is to himself. He must study seriously, but with understanding and not just for marks. He should plan his time, since an hour wasted in youth is a lesson lost for ever. He must also take care of his health, as only a sound body can carry a sound mind, and he should develop a firm character, truthfulness and self-control.
He has a sacred duty to his teachers and parents. Parents bear hardship to educate their children, and teachers give them knowledge. An ideal student respects them, follows their guidance and does not betray their trust by cheating or by wrongdoing.
He is also a part of society. He should help the weak, take part in tree plantation, blood donation and clean-up campaigns, and speak against dowry, drugs and corruption. Even small kindness, like helping a blind man to cross the road, is a duty.
