A farmer is a man who grows crops. About half of the people of Bangladesh depend on agriculture, so the farmer is truly the backbone of our nation.
A farmer’s day begins before sunrise. He takes his plough and oxen, or a power tiller, and goes to the field. He ploughs the land, sows seeds, irrigates and weeds the crop. At noon, he takes a short rest under a tree and eats panta bhat. In the evening, he returns home tired and feeds his cattle.
His life is full of hardship. He works in the burning sun and the heavy rain, and floods or drought may destroy his crops. He often borrows money for seeds and fertiliser, and does not get a fair price for his produce.
Still, he feeds the whole nation, so we should respect him and give him fair prices and modern facilities.

The farmer is the unsung hero of every nation. He does not appear in newspapers or on television, but every grain of rice on our plate carries his sweat. About forty per cent of the working people of Bangladesh are still engaged in agriculture, and the farmer is justly called the backbone of the country.
The farmer’s day starts with the call of the muezzin or the crow of the cock. After a light breakfast, he goes to the field with his cattle and plough, or a power tiller if he is better off. His wife and children help him in transplanting, weeding and harvesting, and the women of the house also look after the post-harvest work of drying and storing. By afternoon, he is back home, exhausted but content.
His life follows the rhythm of seasons. In Boishakh and Jaistha, he prepares the land for jute and aus rice; in the rainy season, he transplants aman seedlings; and in winter, he cuts the golden crop and grows vegetables and mustard. The harvest season is the happiest time of his life, when the Nabanna festival is celebrated.
Yet his hardship is endless. Floods, drought and pests may ruin his crop in a night. He borrows from moneylenders at high interest to buy seeds, fertiliser and diesel, and middlemen take away much of the price of his produce. His house is a simple hut, his children often lack good schools, and medical help is far away. Climate change adds new dangers, like salinity and river erosion.
Despite all this, he feeds a nation of more than 170 million people. The government has made progress in giving fertiliser subsidies, agricultural loans and training, and in the use of mobile phones for market prices. But much more is needed: cold storage, fair prices, crop insurance and easy credit.
In conclusion, a farmer is a silent soldier of the economy. If we respect and support him, our granaries will remain full, and the nation will remain secure.
