Bangladesh has six seasons, and the rainy season, or the monsoon, is one of the most important of them. It comes after the hot summer and lasts from June to September.
The sky is covered with heavy black clouds, and it rains almost every day. Sometimes there is a continuous downpour for days, with thunder and lightning. Rivers swell, ponds and canals overflow, and the trees look fresh and green.
The season gives us many pleasures. The cool air gives relief from the heat. The fields are ready for aman paddy and jute. The kadam and kamini flowers bloom, and village boys enjoy fishing and sailing paper boats.
But it has troubles too. Roads become muddy, cities suffer from waterlogging, and floods may destroy houses and crops. Diseases like dengue and diarrhoea spread.
Despite the troubles, the rainy season is a blessing, because it gives life to the land.

When the summer sun has scorched the earth for weeks and the ponds have dried up, a low rumble of thunder in the north-west announces the arrival of a guest whom everybody welcomes: the rainy season. In Bangladesh, the season is called Barsha, and it holds a special place in the heart of every Bengali.
The season begins in June and extends till September, covering Asharh and Srabon. Dark clouds roll across the sky, and soon the earth is washed by heavy rain. Sometimes the rain falls for days without a break; sometimes the sun peeps for a while and a rainbow adorns the sky. The rivers become wide and wild, and the haors seem like seas.
Nature changes her dress. The brown fields turn green, the trees wash their leaves, and the ponds are covered with water lilies. The kadam and jasmine flowers send their smell into the damp air, and frogs croak in chorus. In the evening, the sound of rain on a tin roof is the sweetest music.
The rains are the lifeline of our agriculture. They supply water for aman paddy and jute, refill the groundwater and make the soil fertile with silt. The hilsa fish, so dear to Bengalis, is at its best in this season, and the dish of khichuri with fried hilsa on a rainy day is a delight beyond description.

The poor, whose houses are weak, suffer most, and diseases like dengue, cholera and skin infections spread easily.
Bengali literature is full of the rains. Rabindranath Tagore wrote scores of songs on the monsoon, and Nazrul and Jibanananda Das also painted its mood in their poems. The rainy day gives writers a mind full of longing and memory.
