The computer is the most versatile machine ever made by man. From a giant machine that filled a room in the 1940s, it has become a thing which fits into a pocket, and today, hardly any work is possible without it.
The uses are almost endless. In offices, banks and industries, it performs calculation, accounting and record-keeping at lightning speed. In education, it is a powerful teacher: students can use it to learn languages, solve problems, access digital libraries and attend online classes, and researchers use it for analysis and simulation. In health care, it helps in diagnosis, scanning and the management of patient records. Engineers and architects design with it, and designers produce films and graphics. The internet has made communication instant through email and video calls and has enabled e-commerce, e-governance and mobile banking. For Bangladesh, the computer has opened the door to freelancing and the IT industry, giving jobs to thousands of young people.
But its misuse is serious. Hackers steal data and money, and cyber bullying and online fraud harm many people. Computer viruses and malware destroy files. Internet addiction, especially in online games and social media, wastes the time of the young, and unfiltered websites expose children to harmful materials. The spread of false news damages social peace. Long use causes eye strain, back pain and sleeplessness, and dependence on the machine reduces our ability to think and remember.
The remedy is not to reject the computer but to control its use. Users should use antivirus software, strong passwords and be careful about unknown links. Parents and teachers should guide children and fix screen time. The government should make and enforce laws against cyber crime and spread digital literacy so that people use the technology safely.
