When man first saw lightning, he feared it as the anger of the gods; today he brings that lightning into his home and uses it to read, cook and communicate. This transformation is the story of science. The wonders of modern science are so many that it is difficult to list them all.
In communication, the telephone, radio, television and the internet have shrunk the world into a village. A student in Bangladesh may join a lecture of a professor in another continent, and a mother can see the face of her son living abroad through a video call. In transport, high-speed trains, ships and jet aeroplanes can cross continents in hours, and electric cars and the metro rail are making cities cleaner.
In medicine, science has performed miracles. Vaccines have eliminated smallpox and brought polio under control, antibiotics cure infections that once killed millions, and organ transplants, MRI, laser surgery and robotic surgery give hope to the hopeless. The vaccines against COVID-19 were developed in less than a year, a record in scientific history.
In space, Yuri Gagarin became the first man to travel into space in 1961, and in 1969, Neil Armstrong set his foot on the moon. Satellites now help with weather forecasts, navigation and television, and space telescopes show us the far edge of the universe.
In our own days, artificial intelligence and robotics are the new wonders. Machines now translate languages, diagnose diseases from images and drive cars, and robots work in factories and dangerous places. The use of renewable energy like solar power gives hope in the fight against climate change.
Yet every wonder has a shadow. The same atomic energy which lights a city can destroy it, as the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki showed. Factories and cars pollute the air, plastic waste chokes the sea, and the misuse of social media spreads falsehood. Dependence on machines also threatens employment and human relationships.
Thus science is a good servant but a bad master. The wisdom of using it rests with man. If science is joined with morality, it will lead civilisation to peace and prosperity; if not, it may lead to ruin.
